McGee's Swamp Tours & Adventures
McGee's Swamp Tours & Adventures is located in Henderson, Louisiana in the heart of Cajun Country, and has been a South Louisiana tradition and traveler destination for 40 years. Located just 20 minutes east of Lafayette and 2-hours west of New Orleans. Folks from around the world visit McGee's to experience the sights and sounds of the Atchafalaya Swamp on one of our world famous swamp and airboat tours, or to create their own adventure with our canoeing rentals and photography excursion opportunities. At the beginning of 2017, the McGee's property was purchased from the Allemond Family by Louisiana Swamp Base, Inc., a non-profit adventure, and conservation program affiliated with the Boy Scouts of America. Swamp Base's goal is to immerse people from all over the world into the unique and often misunderstood wilderness of America's greatest swamp. McGee's helps fulfill this goal by providing insightful, entertaining and educational tours to the general public, tour companies, and school groups. About the Atchafalaya Swamp From its majestic cypress and tupelo covered swamps to the egrets and alligators that fill its skies and endless waterways, the Atchafalaya Swamp has come to symbolize life in Louisiana. Pronounced “uh-CHA-fuh-LIE-uh,” the Atchafalaya gets its name from the Choctaw phrase for “Long River.” An unmatched American wilderness, the Atchafalaya Swamp encompasses 1.4 million acres—an area bigger than the state of Delaware—between Lafayette and Baton Rouge, Louisiana. With an abundance of nutrient-rich water flowing through the swamp from the Mississippi River, the Atchafalaya is one of the richest areas in the country in regard to diversity of wildlife. In fact, the Atchafalaya supports half of America’s migratory waterfowl and provides the most important habitat for Neotropical migratory land birds and other birds of the Mississippi Flyway. More so than any other animal, the American alligator has come to represent the swamp. Once endangered, nearly 2 million alligators now live in the wild across Louisiana. These apex predators can grow up to 14 feet in length and have between 74 and 80 teeth in their mouth at any given time. During a McGee's swamp tour, when the weather is right, you're sure to see alligators throughout the area! SWAMP TOURS Get ready for a tour of a lifetime through moss-draped cypress trees, where graceful egrets perch just out of the reach of lingering alligators! The young and not-so-young will enjoy our swamp tours and airboat trips through one of the most unique wildernesses on Earth. While on the tour, you'll explore the diverse natural beauty and rich ecological systems of America's largest and most mysterious swamp ecosystem, the Atchafalaya Swamp! Native tour guides will explain from personal experience what it is like to live on a houseboat or survive off the swamp--while pointing out the abundant plant and wildlife indigenous to the area. ADVENTURES Sometimes it's just more fun to find your own path and create your own adventure! McGee's is the only location in the Atchafalaya Swamp that rents canoes and offers unguided paddling trips through the swamp, as well as guided photography workshops. Whether you're new to paddling or a seasoned adventurer, the vastness of the Atchafalaya Swamp and our trails will be able to accommodate you and your group's thirst for exploration. Paddling offers a unique and eco-friendly way to experience the swamp by quietly gliding among the trees, and not disturbing the wildlife. Our photo tours are designed to make sure you leave the area with not only great keepsakes, but images to be proud of. During a 3-hour guided tour, you will learn about the swamp, and the techniques for best photographing this amazing environment.
