Treasures of Tangipahoa

The warmth and charm of Tangipahoa Parish is unlike any you’ll experience in the state. One visit to the area and you’ll understand why the population is one of the fastest growing in Louisiana. With its close proximity to prominent Louisiana cities like Baton Rouge and New Orleans and adopting big city resources, Tangipahoa Parish stays true to the small town charm that visitors come to expect. From strolling down the sidewalks of a nationally recognized antique city to taking a tour through history, there are many treasures to discover.

Some of the hidden surprises can be found in towns surrounding Hammond and Ponchatoula. Just 25 miles north of Hammond lies the town of Tangipahoa and the Camp Moore Confederate Museum and Cemetery. Camp Moore was the largest Confederate training camp in Louisiana and it’s the only one in the United States that is still open to the public. The museum tells the story of the common solider through his personal items and the games and music that were played while stationed there. There are many displays dedicated to the artillery and weapons from the period. The camp hosts a Reenactment and Living History event the weekend before Thanksgiving each year that is a “must see”. The museum is open from Wednesday through Saturday from 10:00 am until 3:00 pm. The grounds at Camp Moore are open seven days a week from daylight to dusk for pedestrians. You are welcome to walk the grounds and take the self-guided walking tour.

In Hammond, check out the Jacmel Inn Restaurant for food that will delight every palate. Shop the downtown stores to find many treasures, antiques, and something special for that someone special. You will find museums to peruse and parks for children to enjoy. There is also the Kliebert’s Turtle & Alligator Farm! You can get up close and personal with the wild life and learn all about alligators and turtles. There is something for every age to explore!
