The Grandeur of the Grand Marais: Iberia Parish's Mardi Gras
The words "Grand Marais" mean "Big Marsh". However, in Iberia Parish during Mardi Gras season, it means "Big Party". The uniqueness about the Grand Marais Mardi Gras celebration is the theme. Most Mardi Gras Krewes have themes, but in Grand Marais, you just go with the flow and its all about the costumes.
Mardi Gras celebration in Grand Marais is a 4-night party event that starts on the Friday before Mardi Gras and geos on through the Monday night. Each night there are costume competitions for the Ugliest, Most Original, the Prettiest Female and Male Costume, and more. People from near and far come to see these costumes.
The prettiest female and male costumes are decked out from head to toe with huge collars that extend out to about 5 ot 6 feet and are embellished with plumes, fabric, lights, sequins, and rhinestones. The ladies' dresses and men's outfits are decorated with identical designs and have matching capes that are approximately 12 feet in length. Highly decorated gloves, shoes, and masks are also worn by the ladies and men. These costumes cost about $5,000 - $7,000 each and are made from scratch. The costume competition is very intense, but well worth the effort.
Monday night, the King and Queen are chosen who will reign and ride in the Grand Marais Mardi Gras parade on Fat Tuesday. The King and Queen are selected according to how many nights they win the costume competition.
After 4 nights of partying, the Krewes, float riders, bands, etc. are up early to get ready for the parade. Grand Marais Mardi Gras parade is well known for it being very family oriented. Everyone makes sure it is colorful, elaborate, and very entertaining. February 28, 2017 will be Grand Marais' 37th Annual Mardi Gras Parade.
