Jumbo Helping of Gumbo: Iberia Parish

Gumbo is a pièce de résistance in Southern Louisiana, so it's no surprise the World Championship Gumbo Cook-off calls Iberia Parish home.  Hosted on historic downtown Main Street, the two day event features the coming together of locals and visitors to celebrate Cajun cuisine and music.  The main event happens Sunday, October 15th with 100 teams competing to call themselves "champions" with the best gumbo in the world.

"You get it all with the World Championship Gumbo Cook-off--the best Cajun and Zydeco music, locals who love to chat with visitors, a wide variety of Cajun and Creole food on Saturday (like crawfish etouffee, fried alligator sausage, charbroiled oysters, crab cakes, corn and crab bisque) and, of course, the best gumbo in the world on Sunday," said Janet Faulk-Gonzales, CEO of the Greater Iberia Chamber of Commerce.

Saturday is fondly dubbed "Cajun Creole Foodfest" with teams cooking their favorite Cajun and Creole dishes for lunch.  The chefs mix and concoct "anything but gumbo" for attendees to sample.  It's a fantastic way to try Louisiana's traditional dishes all in one convenient location!  Local museums will hold tours during the day and downtown businesses will open for shopping and special deals only available during cook-off weekend.

The "battle of the rouxs" kicks off bright and early at 6 a.m. on Sunday.  The cooks stir and chop while support crews perform skits and participate in the booth decoration contest until 11 a.m. when tasting starts.  The competition and judging of over 100+ types of gumbos take place throughout the day.  Teams are divided between professional and amateur and are required to cook a minimum of 60 quarts.  Visitors can try as many types of gumbo as their hearts desire.  The winners will be announced at 3:30 p.m.

Music artists Chubby Carrier, Hwy 90, Two in the Chamber, Jaryd Lane, Jason Miller Band, Geno Delafosse, and Roddie Romero will be performing at the pavilion during the two day event.  So after you try all the different "Cajun Creole Foods" and the different gumbos, you can dance all the calories away!
